1) Check at the rune merchant to see what the price is. If it's 100, sell the item to the normal merchant (don't salvage).
2) If the rune is desirable (costs a few hundred gold or more) salvage the rune and sell it to the rune merchant. If you're lucky and get to keep the original item, sell that to the merchant.
3) If you're not sure, I'd salvage. There's at least a 50% chance you'll keep the original item so I think it's worth it.

Keep in mind that the amount you'll get for selling the rune is not what's listed at the trader.

Go to the rune trader and if the amount you can buy the rune at is ~120g greater than the gold item (the resale of the rune is 100g less than the selling price, plus 20 for the salvage kit), then salvage it. If not, then merch.

You check with the Rune Trader NPC to see what price she sells at. That will tell you if it is worth chancing losing the 240g while salvaging. I will say that most Gold Runes are not worth more than 125g (ID'd after salvage).

If the Rune Trader is asking 100g, then the normal buyback price she will offer is 25g. If the rune is gold, you can ID it after salvage and get a little more from the Merchant. This only pertains to gold runes.

Me personally, I salvage everything. Even blue weapons, purple weapons, and gold weapons (depending on what they are). I don't visit the Merchant unless I need a Kit. When it comes to gold salvage items, I'll check the rune first at the rune trader. If it's a good one (Sup Vigor etc), then sell it for the extra cash if you need it. If it's a Sup Rune of <attribute>, I'll usually Salvage it off and put it on a hero that needs it. Then Salvage the rest of the Salvage item.

I usually always get rare mats from gold Salvage items. Plus I like having an overstock of materials whenever I need them.

For that particular item, better off just selling it to a regular Merchant rather than trying to salvage it.

Either use a superior or expert when salvaging mods (no difference between these two, except the number of uses). A normal kit will only be able to salvage materials and not the runes.
